Nearly two dozen black pilots for United Airlines filed a federal discrimination lawsuit claiming few minority workers are promoted to upper management at the world's largest air carrier.
The lawsuit claims blacks who are in upper management jobs were promoted simply to give the company a false appearance of diversity.
Those managers are often excluded from social gatherings, informal email chains and other forums where company issues are discussed, the legal action states.
United vowed Wednesday to vigorously defend itself against the allegations made by 22 pilots in the lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco.
"United does not tolerate harassment or discrimination of any kind," spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said. "We believe this lawsuit is without merit."
The lawsuit claims that nearly all black employees at United Continental Holdings Inc., United's parent company, are in non-management positions.
The pilots are seeking an end to the alleged discrimination, back pay and other damages.
United and Continental Airlines merged in 2010. Most of the pilots involved in the lawsuit flew with United before the merger.
The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Donna M. Ryu.

One of the men charged in a Dodger Stadium parking lot assault on San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow told his own mother that he was involved and expected to "go down" for the attack.
A videotape played Wednesday in a preliminary hearing showed Marvin Norwood talking to his mother by cellphone during an interview with police.
In the conversation he said he had been arrested for the Dodger Stadium assault and had been involved. He also mentioned co-defendant Louie Sanchez as having been there.
He told his mother he was sorry.
A judge is hearing evidence to determine whether Norwood and Sanchez should stand trial in the beating of Stow after the game between the Dodgers and Giants on March 31, 2011.

A former deliveryman for a South San Francisco seafood company is facing two-and-a-half years in prison for exchanging a load of fish for crack cocaine and abandoning his employer's truck.
The San Mateo County Journal reports that Byron Duane Bates pleaded no contest to felony auto theft Tuesday as part of a deal with prosecutors, who agreed to drop two embezzlement charges.
South San Francisco police say the 44-year-old Bates was supposed to deliver a truckload of fish worth $10,000 to the Sacramento area on Oct. 14. Customers called his employer, the
Newport Fish Company, in the afternoon saying their orders had not arrived.
The truck was found abandoned in Oakland four days later with a small amount of rotten fish in it. Bates told police he had traded it away for $400 of crack.
